That’s the vision of the author of this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing, who urges others to be as inspired to explore nature’s wonders as she is by the rugged, wild landscape of the vast Deschutes River Canyon of her childhood.
“A Porcupine’s Quill” features stunning color photographs of the natural world as well as colored pencil illustrations by the author’s daughter, Emily Singer.
The contemplative work stars a second-grader on a mission: Climbing her favorite tree. Within the shelter of the tree’s leave and branches she feels as if she’s in a protective embrace. Another wonder awaits discovery in its branches – porcupine quills, ivory colored with black tips that are incredibly sharp. Climbing down from the tree unscathed, she discovers creatures such as scorpions, snakes, bullfrogs and lizards that live in the valley, as well as crawdads that forge through the river’s currents.
Still thinking of the quills, she sets up a tent to try to discover the creature that left them but hears only coyotes howling in the distance. Each snap of a branch or scuffle leads to hopes but looking outside the tent proves impossible. The quills represent “The pure joy of discovery, a joy I carry with me to this day,” the author writes, harkening back to a time when her only challenge was climbing up a willow tree.
Author Adria Cannon and her daughter, Emily Singer, work together to bring true stories about nature to life. Singer, who illustrates the book with her drawings, was born in 2002 on Vashon Island. Cannon was born in central Oregon near the Deschutes River Canyon.
